Astragalus woolly-flowered (Astragálus dasyánthus) was known for its healing properties at the dawn of the fifth century BC. In Scythian traditions it was called - the grass of life or royal, giving strength and youth, and slowing down aging. It was intended only for the treatment of rulers and their families.
And everyone who violated the law used it, was punished with the death penalty. Recipes for this wonderful plant were recorded on gold tablets and buried by the Goths of the Scythian kingdom, somewhere in the Crimea.
And it is no coincidence that both Hitler and Stalin, who wanted to Astragálus gain immortality.
Hitler created a special and very secret project in Ahnenerb, which provided for excavations in the occupied Crimean peninsula in search of gold plates. Investigations of ancient settlements during the excavation of Crimean barrows were not unsuccessful, but only five tablets from the entire Travnik of the Scythians were found. Among which was this plant.
After that, a search brigade was established in the territory of Crimea by the Nazis. Astragálus, which attracted the attention of the Crimean partisans. Having collected the necessary information about this German expedition, the information was sent to Moscow.
Stalin knew how to attach importance to trifles, which at first glance seemed completely insignificant, so he carefully studied this information, and instructed a group of doctors to examine the plant and prepare medicinal preparations based on it. Information about these studies cost many who knew about her existence .... Therefore, they call it the grass of the life of the Kremlin leaders.
What is interesting is the biological description of the astragalus flower.
Now we are talking about the woolly-flowering appearance of this plant from the legume family, which is common in the steppe zone of the European part of Russia. He loves open sunny places, but is also found in forest glades, and grows in old cemeteries and small mounds.
Description of the plant. This is a perennial, up to 35 cm in height, the stems are in a reclining state and only its tops rise up. In the people it is often called cat peas. The stems and leaves are covered with thick hairs. The leaves are long, up to 20 cm, consist of paired (12-14), small leaves. In general, on the territory of our country, a huge number of different types of astragalus grows, numbering over 2,000 species in their family.
And in order not to get confused on this list, I specially posted more photos of the woolly-flowered species, which has yellow flowers growing on peduncles and collected in inflorescences - capitate brushes. In the brushes, you can count up to 20 medium-sized flowers that look like a boat (up to 1.5 cm), with a sail (up to 2.5 cm) and boat wings (up to 1.8 cm long).
After flowering, closer to September, fruits are formed - beans (up to 1.1 cm), having an oval shape with a long nose. The roots of old plants are long and thick.
Speculation, legends and talk about the secrets of this plant caused a wave of amateurs to earn extra money on its sale and the plant was on the verge of destruction. Now it is listed in the Red Book and is protected by the state.

In addition, the healing plant is used for muscular dystrophy, poisoning, uterine prolapse, shortness of breath, cyanosis, diuresis.
Scientific explanation of the importance of astragalus to prolong life
☀ In order to understand this high-profile statement, you need to understand what is a key part of the aging process. It is believed that this is due to DNA molecules. The ends of DNA strands are called telomeres. They are not a code for anything, but play a very important role in protecting the rest of the DNA from damage or rupture. That is, they are something like a shield.
☀ However, there are some radicals that damage telomeres, regularly breaking them. Fortunately, the body has a special enzyme that restores them and is called telomerase. Maintaining telomeres in good condition protects DNA from damage, and DNA damage from various sources, such as radicals, which are considered the main cause of the development of signs of aging: the appearance of wrinkles, joint diseases.
☀ Years go by, the telomere length begins to shorten, thereby reducing the amount of DNA protection, so the first typical signs of aging begin to appear. These signs can be either slowed down or accelerated, depending on how many radicals are in the human body.
☀ Smoking or overuse of sun loungers on the beach will obviously increase the amount of radicals. And the use of fresh fruits and vegetables in large quantities, on the contrary, will slow down these symptoms. Ultimately, telomere length plays a crucial role in protecting the DNA and reduces the onset of aging: the longer the telomere, the better the DNA is protected.
Watch the video how to prepare tincture for rejuvenation from astragalus:
☀ Astragálus is a unique source of a compound such as cycloastragenol (or TA-65), which is capable of activating the telomerase enzyme. This helps to reduce speed, shorten stelomeres, or even possibly lengthen telomeres to reduce signs of aging.
☀ One study showed that TA-65 was able to induce telomerase activity 1.4 to 3.3 times, relative to control groups and other compounds. And another showed that treatment with TA-65 lengthens telomeres and reduces DNA damage associated with short telomeres.
☀ It should be recognized that the studies are not accurate, but the current results are promising and show clear results. The compounds contained in the plant activate telomerase and protect against the onset of signs of aging. At EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), they conducted their research and concluded that it really can “protect cells and tissues from oxidative damage”.
☀ This evidence does not indicate an increase in life expectancy and does not affect health. Health is a measure of how healthy you are, and life expectancy is an indicator of age, a plant does not affect the increase in this duration. However, it delays the onset of signs of aging, and is attractive to those who want to stay young for as long as possible.
Other benefits of astragalus
In China, decoctions of inflorescences are designed to treat any number of diseases, especially colds, of the urinary tract. In Russia, this plant has not been studied well enough. But let's not forget that the beneficial properties of green tea, turmeric, also began to be used as unconfirmed information.
Now all the advantages of these products are well known and widely used. Currently, there is already some evidence that Astragálus can stimulate the immune system, and can also protect the kidneys from damage ...
Botanical description of astragalus woolly-flowered
Perennial summer-green herbaceous plant of the legume family with many-headed, stem, fleshy root. Stems up to 50 cm tall are upright or upright, leaves are 10–20 cm long, with 10–17 pairs of oblong-elliptic leaflets. Leaves and stems densely pubescent with reddish hairs. The flowers are collected in dense, spherical or slightly oval brushes on long pedicels. Corolla yellow, moth, five-lobed, densely pubescent. Unlike other species, the boat is pubescent. The fruit is an ovoid bean with 2-6 kidney-shaped seeds of dark green color, 2-3 mm long. The mass of 1000 seeds is 4-6 g.
Contraindications to the use of cat beans
There were no particular complications and phenomena when using drugs. But still, it is necessary to be more careful for those who have allergic reactions to herbal drugs.
Under the supervision of a doctor, decoctions and infusions should be taken for people with low blood pressure and with chronic heart diseases. There is an assertion that large doses of the drug are not harmful to health, therefore, it is recommended to drink an infusion, but nevertheless, attention to your well-being will be useful.
Is there a scientific risk to health?
- If Astragálus can have a beneficial effect on the body, most likely, it can carry negative effects. It is worth thinking twice about trying to increase telomerase activity, which stimulates the immune system, causing hair loss. Therefore, all negative consequences should be investigated.
- Fortunately, decoctions and infusions from the plant were consumed for many years and not a single negative effect was recorded, and studies using small dosages showed no toxic effects.
- Studies using extremely high dosages of 2000 mg per kg body weight (cycloastragenol - the active ingredient in the herb) have also shown no toxic effect. Therefore, in order to approach a dangerous dosage, you will need more than one kg of raw materials.
- Concern was also expressed that the impact Astragálus by the length of the telomeres, can trigger the growth of cancer cells. However, studies have shown that this is not so. Astragalus has been shown to supplement chemotherapy by increasing its productivity or by reducing its toxicity.
- There were no health risks associated with the intake, and its toxicology was tested with very high dosages, so do not worry about the possible negative effects from it.

The generic name "astragalus" today designates more than two thousand plants common in the Northern Hemisphere. Most of them grow in Central Asia, the Crimea and the Caucasus. Astragalus includes shrubs, shrubs, herbaceous one and perennial plants. But they are all recognized by the complex, pinnate leaves and flowers in the axillary brushes, collected in inflorescences, umbrellas, spikelets or heads. But only one representative of this large family has powerful healing abilities - astragalus woolly flowering, belonging to the legume family. In the people, this plant is known as cat peas or astragalus fluffy. Although botanists say that fluffy and fluffy are two different astragalus.
Woolly astragalus is recognizable by the reddish gun covering the ground part of the plant. This perennial grass grows to half a meter. Its stems are covered with complex pinnate leaves. Another defining feature is the inflorescence. In this astragalus, it is a capitate brush of 10-20 yellow moth flowers. Cat pea blooms in late spring - early summer. Fruits in small beans (about 1 cm in length) - hairy, ovoid or oval, which appear on the stems in July-September.
This type of astragalus is common in the Black Sea, Dnieper, in the Volga-Don basin. It can be seen in the territory of abandoned cemeteries, in mounds, some glades. Astragalus woolly-flowered tolerates different weather conditions, but does not take root in grazing areas.

The plant is not found in nature. Basically, it can be found in Moldova, Hungary, Ukraine, as well as in the countries of the Balkan Peninsula. In Russia, it grows in the Volga-Don basin and in the south of the European part.
Most suitable for astragalus are steppe, open areas, clearings, edges, barrows. She doesn’t need much moisture, but she loves light.
Origin of name
It is believed that its name comes from the Greek word "astragalos". So called dice made of lamb ankles, the shape of which has an external resemblance to the shape of the seeds of a plant. Astragalus woolly has many popular names - cat peas, Polish count, centaury, Scythian grass of life. Because of its popularity in folk medicine, it has recently become rare in nature, so it is listed in the Red Book.
Astragalus woolly flowered was known to ancient Scythians. They worshiped this plant, believed that it could cure any disease and called it "grass of immortality" or "royal grass". However, it was used only to treat the ruling nobility. According to the laws of that time, ordinary people were forbidden to use it, and the violation was punishable by death.
In the 20th century, Adolf Hitler's attending physician Gerhard Madaus became interested in the “Scythian grass of life”, who compiled a catalog of medicinal plants and found references to it in the writings of the Greeks living in Crimea. Even then, the world leaders thought about eternal life and tried by any means to achieve it.
In the 50s of the twentieth century, Stalin became interested in the same issue. He began to get very sick, and since pharmacology did not have a modern level of development, mainly herbs were used for the treatment. Doctors again remembered about "grass of immortality"And conducted the necessary research. After confirming the beneficial effects of the plant on human health, Stalin began to use it as a medicine.
Some sources claim that subsequent Kremlin leaders also tried to extend their lives with the help of a woolly flowered astragalus.
There are several legends telling about the origin of astragalus. The first legend tells of the Gallic tribes, nice, kind people who came down from the mountains and decided to spend the night at their foot. However, even before sunrise, they woke up from inexplicable music that poured from the plains streaming with the golden light. The Gauls were frightened, thought they had reached the end of the earth and reached the sky on which the stars shone. And they called these brilliant lights "astra galos", Which means the stars of the Gauls. In fact, the plain was covered with blooming astragals, which ancient people confused with the stars.
According to another story, astragalus flowers are of extraterrestrial origin.
Once many centuries ago, the Goddess Selena fell in love with a mortal young man, the beautiful Endymion, Prince of Caria. But their love could not be eternal. Selena turned for help to the supreme ruler Zeus with a prayer for help, but he could not disturb the order and give eternal life to mortal. However, he had mercy on the inconsolable goddess and granted her lover an eternal dream, during which his body and youth would remain incorrupt. Since then, every night, Selena admires her lover and whispers words of love to him, but Endymion has a good dream, he does not hear the confessions of his beloved. That is why Selena is always sad, sometimes flowers fall from a wreath with her head, and, having reached the surface of the earth, they immediately grow. They are called astragals.
Since astragalus woolly flowering is an endangered species, it began to be cultivated and grown in artificial conditions. Although the plant is considered drought tolerant, it needs to be adequately hydrated during its development. Propagated by seeds that are pre-scarified.
Astragalus should be sown in early spring in the soil thoroughly cleared of weeds and enriched with fertilizers. The plant slowly emerges, the first shoots appear above the surface of the earth only after 2 or 3 weeks. Sprouting weed must be cleaned immediately.
Seeds can be collected only in the second year of vegetation.
Collection and Harvesting
Mainly for medicinal purposes, the ground part of the plant is used. The collection of grass occurs during its flowering. Cut stems with flowers and leaves need a small distance from the surface of the earth, but not more than 5-7 cm.
Dry the collected parts of the plant in the attics under a slate roof or under a canopy with good air circulation, spreading them on a cloth, paper or grate with a layer of 5-7 cm thick. You can store dry raw materials for 1.5 years in packaged form.

Spread of Astragalus Woolly-flowered
In the south of Ukraine, it is mainly rare, in small quantities, on the slopes of beams and hand valleys, on hay meadows, in sparse shrubs. It forms small thickets in the north of the Zaporozhye region along the left bank of the Dnieper. Astragalus woolly-flowered is listed in the Red Book. In connection with the depletion of wild thickets introduced into the culture.
Rules for harvesting astragalus woolly
The raw material of astragalus is grass, consisting of leafy, non-lignified stems with flowers about 20 cm long, the smell is weak, peculiar. The taste is sweetish. Raw materials should be with a moisture content not exceeding 13% and contain browned and yellowed stems and leaves not more than 5%, organic and mineral impurities - not more than 1 and 2%, respectively.
Harvest grass in late May-June, during the period of mass flowering before the formation of fruits. Plants are cut with sickles or knives. You can’t tear off your hands, as this will damage the kidneys. Part of the shoots should be left on the seeds. The cut grass is loosely stacked in baskets or bags and immediately delivered to the place of drying. Impurities are selected from raw materials, laid out in a thin layer under awnings in well-ventilated rooms, periodically turning over. Drying is considered complete when the stems and petioles of the leaves become brittle. You need to know that in the places of growth of astragalus woolly flowering, other species can be found that are very similar, which cannot be harvested.
Medical Importance of Astragalus Woolflower
The grass of astragalus flowery contains polysaccharides (bassorin and arabin), flavonoids (quercetin and kempferol), organic acids, glycyrrhizin, triterpene saponins, starch and a complex of trace elements (iron, aluminum, magnesium, strontium, molybdenum, vanadium, calcium, phosphorus and manganese).
Astragalus preparations have hypotensive, sedative and cardiotonic effects. They improve liver activity, increase diuresis and blood circulation in the kidneys, reduce swelling, have a positive inotropic and negative chronotropic effect on the heart, and expand the coronary vessels and blood vessels of the kidneys.Herbal infusion is prescribed for hypertension, chronic heart failure of the first and second degree, accompanied by tachycardia, angina pectoris, edema, chronic and acute glomsrulonephritis. Astragalus preparations do not have a cumulative effect. The plant is widely used in folk medicine as a hemostatic, diaphoretic, diuretic and antiemetic. They treat them with rheumatic pains, scrofula, edema of various etiologies, prolapse of the uterus and renal hypertension.
For internal use, prepare an infusion (10 g of herb per 200 ml of water), take 2 tablespoons 3-6 times a day. For an external bath and lotions from infusion, powder is also made to sprinkle ulcers and light wounds.
Biological features of astragalus woolly-flowered
Astragalus woolly flowering is a drought-resistant, light-loving plant, however, to obtain a high yield in arid and semi-arid zones of southern Ukraine, it requires sufficient moisture supply. For good growth and normal development, it needs watering, especially in the first year of vegetation. It is undemanding to soils, but grows better on chernozems of medium mechanical composition. Propagated only by seeds that have a dense shell and low germination (10–20%), but when the seeds are scarified manually (pass them through coarse-grained emery paper) or on special scarifier machines, the germination rate increases to 70–80%.
Astragalus is sown in early spring, seedlings appear on the 14-20 day and within 40-50 days need good care. The budding period begins at 60–70 days and ends at 70–90 days after the first outcomes appear. The flowering period is extended to 40-50 days. After the onset of the first frosts, the aerial part of the plants dies, the root with the buds of renewal hibernates. On the torus and subsequent years of vegetation, astragalus grows in early April, blooms in late May, the fruits begin to ripen in July. The ripening period is 2-3 months, and with insufficient moisture supply, the aboveground part dies. In one place, astragalus can be grown with good care up to 4 years, but the highest yield occurs in the second year of vegetation, and in the subsequent years it decreases, plantations are thinned out. The yield of dry grass in the first year of life is 8-10 kg / ha, in the second - 18-20 kg / ha, in the third - 16-18 kg / ha.
Techniques for cultivating astragalus woolly-flowered
Astragalus must be placed in specialized crop rotations; it cannot be sown on heavily weedy, especially perennial weeds, miles and after legumes. The best predecessors for the south of Ukraine are clean and busy couples, winter grains and early harvested forage crops.
The main tillage is carried out according to general rules that take into account the zonal features of the region and should be aimed at clearing the field of weeds, storing and accumulating soil moisture and creating favorable conditions for emergence of astragalus seedlings.
Plowing should be done to a depth of 27-30 cm with simultaneous rolling of a ring roller, then, as weeds appear, the field is cultivated until late autumn. In winter, the site for sowing should go with a level surface, a small-clumped soil structure and in a state clean of weeds. Astragalus must be sown in early spring, at the end of March. Pre-sowing treatment consists only in harrowing, since during cultivation there is a high probability of not receiving seedlings, due to the overdried top layer and the loss of contact of seeds with a moist horizon.
Sow with a СО-4,2 seeder, equipped with disc coulters with a depth limiter and devices for simultaneous, separate fertilizer application on the side of the row. The row spacing is 60–70 cm, the sowing rate is 8–10 kg / ha, and the sowing depth is 3 cm.
Slow growth and development of plants in the first period after emergence of seedlings requires careful maintenance of crops. If seedlings have not appeared, and there are a lot of weeds, they proceed to the first inter-row cultivation of the soil, orienting the movement of the tractor along the track remaining after sowing. The depth of processing is 4-5 cm, the protective zone on each side of the row is at least 20 cm. With the emergence of seedlings, they begin manual weeding and, as necessary, inter-row treatments with shields installed on the cultivator protecting small shoots from dusting with earth. With the growth of astragalus, the protective zone of processing decreases to 10 cm. Usually, in the first year, 2-3 manual weeding and 4-6 inter-row treatments are carried out. The optimal density is 10-15 well-developed plants per meter. In early spring, transplanting plantations are harrowed across rows in order to preserve moisture, destroy weed seedlings and clean crops from dead remains of astragalus grass. In the second and subsequent years of vegetation, after growing astragalus, conducting: the first inter-row cultivation with the simultaneous application of mineral fertilizers to a depth of 8-10 cm. In the future, weeds are weeded in rows and loosened by row cultivators to a depth of 6-8 cm.
Astragalus is responsive to fertilizers. In the south of Ukraine, for plowing, you need to make mineral fertilizers at the rate of N120P60 and annually, after the growth of plants, - N60.
One of the most important factors for obtaining high and stable yields of astragalus in southern Ukraine is irrigation. Conducting 2-3 irrigation with a norm of 500-600 m 3 / ha, allows you to get one mowing in the first year of vegetation. In the second and subsequent years of life, you need to water at least four times. At the same time, productivity increases by 14–26 percent. Irrigation allows you to extend the use of plantations for 1-2 years.
Harvesting astragalus grass is carried out at the beginning of flowering. Mow various types of mowers with stem lifters, stacked in rolls for drying and subsequent mechanized selection.
