Ukrainian Levkoy: an exclusive pet in the house

This breed was bred in Kiev by felinologist Biryukova Elena Vsevolodovna. Levkoys appeared from the cross of Scottish fold cats and Don sphinxes. The first cat of the breed registered by the ICFA RUI tribal commission named “Levkoy Primero” was born on January 21, 2004.

A lot of time passed before the appearance of this breed and it took a lot of work not only of this amazing woman, but also of all her assistants. I must say that the extravagance of the new cat breed immediately attracted attention, and it gradually began to spread throughout the world.

Looking at photographs of Ukrainian left-wingers, many people think that this is an exotic miracle of nature, which came to us from abroad, as they look very unusual. The Ukrainian cat left-handed is named after a flower, and it fully corresponds to this name.

Standard and breed description

Those who saw the Ukrainian leftist once, will never be able to forget it. Original and unusual appearance makes it easily recognizable. Ukrainian levkoy cannot be confused with anyone. The extravagant appearance is not only in the naked body, but also in the flexible ears that attract everyone's attention. Like any other, this breed of cats has its own special standards.
When touching a cat, most note soft and velvety skin.

An important distinguishing feature is the flat skull with a forehead set low. For eye the shape of the tonsils is characteristic, they are not very dilated, but even slightly narrowed.

The color of the eyes of the animal can be any. But cats with intense blue or green eyes are most popular.

Muzzle rounded in shape, with prominent eyebrows and cheekbones. There is a straight line from the ears to the chin.

Body The cat has an elongated shape, and there are many folds on its skin. This is an animal with developed muscles, as well as slender, long, and at the same time strong limbs.

Those who are looking for an unusual friend should definitely pay attention to them. These are not ordinary cats at all. On the paws fingers stand out clearly, and the whole silhouette is distinguished by its grace and dexterity.

Tail Ukrainian levkoy is long and has a narrow tip. In some individuals, the mustache has a curved shape, can be short, or even absent. The same goes for wool. Within the breed there are cats with short hair no more than 3 cm long. Color varies in a very wide range.

When touching a cat, most note soft and velvety skin.

There are a number of cases in which animals are considered defective:

  • - problems in the skeletal system,
  • - problems in development,
  • - squint or too big round eyes,
  • - Underdeveloped chin, round head or too short nose.

Breed characteristics

When looking at an animal before the first meeting with it, you might think that it has an arrogant and complex character. But this impression is misleading.

These cats have a soft and rather flexible character, the same as their skin. The appearance of cats is very bright.

This breed is characterized by pronounced sexual dimorphism. The males have a large muscular body. Cats are distinguished by their sophistication, smaller size and melodic voice.

The Ukrainian Levkoy has a huge number of advantages. They have many positive features. People who have had close contact with them say that finding the best companion is difficult. Fun in the blood of these animals, and they can become a great friend.

These cats are intelligent and sociable. They are friendly and therefore easily get along with both people and other pets.

The reviews of the owners of these cats indicate that there is no hassle with them. These are truly absolutely hassle-free cats.

Kittens of Ukrainian Levkoy are very easy to train in a pot, and there is never a problem with them in this matter. Cats are easily trained, so it’s not difficult to instill the right habits in them. They memorize not too complicated commands and techniques and execute them with enviable speed.

It is also worth noting the curiosity of the Ukrainian Levkoy. They need to know everything that happens at home. Communication with these cats plays a very important role. The owners of the Ukrainian levkoy should not skimp on the praise, and then the joy of the animal will have no limit. Therefore, do not regret petting your pet, and he will answer handsomely.

Ukrainian Levka is cats for people who lead an active lifestyle. They simply will not suit lazy and irresponsible people, since this will be torture for both themselves and the animal. In addition to the sociability and intelligence of the Ukrainian left-wingers, their charisma is distinguished. Indeed, it is rarely possible to meet an animal that is both funny, gentle, affectionate and faithful at the same time.

Their playfulness and activity do not stop 24 hours a day. Such cats can suffer greatly from a lack of affection. They need to be constantly stroked, squeezed and speak kind words to them.

How to play with a cat? Here, literally all toys fit, whether it is a ball or a toy made of feathers. If the owners get a maze for these animals, then they make the right choice, because cats play with this all with great pleasure.

What does Ukrainian Levka not like? The presence of loud, sharp sounds and bouts of violence can permanently unbalance the animal. But tenderness, care and affection will make him happy.

Looking for emotional support in a pet? Levkoys feel mood swings, and are never annoying if they see that the owner is out of sorts. In general, Ukrainian Levkoy is a great friend who can not only defuse the situation, but also cheer up.

Since Ukrainian Levkoy is not aggressive, he can get along with anyone.

The most important thing for such a pet is the attachment and attention of the owners. To this they are guaranteed to reciprocate. A cat may well come into contact with a small child to play energetic games with him, and also can live with an elderly pensioner without any problems.

Before you start a Ukrainian levkoy, it is advisable to learn how to care for him. The fact that a cat has no fur does not mean at all that it does not require skin care.

Of course, they do not have to be combed out intensively. However, due to the peculiarities of the sebaceous glands of Ukrainian left-wingers, they must be bathed with special shampoos much more often than normal cats.

Additional care needs claws, ears and teeth. A cat needs to be accustomed to grooming procedures from early childhood.

In terms of nutrition, cats are not picky. The main thing is that the food should be nutritious and balanced.

In winter, it is necessary to ensure that the cat does not freeze and does not get into drafts. In the summer, the cat should be protected from direct sunlight. If the sun is too long, the cat may get burned.

The skin of the left side dries easily and begins to peel off. Therefore, for care it is worth using a special moisturizing lotion. This animal cannot live on the street.

Levkoys themselves choose a place to sleep, but the owner of the pet should take care of the toilet and bowl with food and water. As with any other pet, you must ensure continued access to quality food and fresh water.

In the case of this cat, the doors in the rooms of the apartment are always better left open, as she needs a place to run and play.

Ukrainian Levkoy is a breed of good-natured and original-looking cats

The founder of the breed is a felinologist from Ukraine Elena Biryukova. She began work on the breeding of these cats in 2000. The first line was based on two breeds - Scottsfold, from whom the left-wing got a lop-eared, and the Don Sphinx, which gave him hairlessness. In further selection, several more species of cats were involved. These are the Canadian sphinx, Peterbald, Persian oriental and home, Scottish fold. Left-handed breeding is carried out according to the heterozygous principle, where the lop-eared gene occupies a dominant position. That is, various species participate in the process. As a parent, one lop-eared partner and an individual with straight ears are selected.

In 2004, the ICFA RUI Tribal Commission registered the first representative of the leftists, who received the nickname Levkoy Primero. The name arose due to the similarity of the ears of bred cats with the same plant with bent leaves. In 2007, the first nursery was organized in Russia - in St. Petersburg. Thanks to the work of breeders, the number of individuals began to increase. In 2008, the society of felinologists of Ukraine and Russia registered more than 200 cats, and by 2010 their number exceeded one thousand. Levkoi gained popularity in countries such as Finland, Belgium, Holland, Israel and Latvia.

Levkoys are allowed both with bare skin and with small hair

The breed standard was adopted in 2012. The left-handed head is elongated, resembling a pentagon from above. The forehead is low, the skull is flat. Cheekbones and superciliary arches well visible. Nose of medium length and width, has a noticeable transition to the forehead. The muzzle is round, its size corresponds to 1/3 of the length of the head. The chin is strong. The neck is muscular, with a slight bend, of medium length. The ears are large, set high and wide, the tips are soft. The third part is bent forward.

The eyes are large in size, almond-shaped, located a little obliquely. Open not wide. Color can be any. The body is predominantly elongated, but its average size is also allowed, it has well-developed muscles. Back with slight bend. The limbs are strong and long. The paws are oval. The tail is flexible, wider at the base and tapers towards the end. The coat is completely absent. The skin is firm and firm. Folds form in the head, between the ears, on the neck, near the eyes, in the groin and armpits. Color is allowed any.

Some individuals of the first stage of breeding have residual hair on the tail, limbs, behind the ears and on the muzzle, and their body can be covered with short velor hair 1-3 mm long. When breeding, brush variations are used. These are individuals with a rigid crimped coat with possible baldness on the head, back and neck. Also, straight-haired cats with bent ears and individuals with soft hair participate in breeding. Ukrainian leftists live about 10-14 years.

Levkoi - affectionate, intelligent, curious and delicate cats

The nature of these cats is quite loving. There is no aggression in their behavior. Levkoi are friendly to all members of the family, very attached to the owners. With other pets get along well. Representatives of this breed need communication and are difficult to tolerate loneliness.

Breeders also note that left-handed people are not vindictive and not picky, easy to learn and have a well-developed intelligence. They are delicate and clean. Despite their gentleness and good nature, these cats are very decisive and may require attention to themselves, stubbornly climbing into the hands of the owners. In general, these funny pets will give owners a lot of comic moments and joy.

Important! If the owner does not have the opportunity to devote a lot of time to the pet, it is recommended to purchase a left-handed companion, for this purpose a cat, a dog or a rodent is suitable.

How to choose a kitten

It is recommended to choose kittens in nurseries

Not all Levkoy kittens are born with a complete lack of hair. They may have a wavy cover. In some individuals, wool disappears with age. By 1.5–2 months, kitten's ears should hang roundly. Since the breed remains very rare today, you need to buy levkoy only in the nursery. The cost of a kitten varies between 5–20 thousand rubles in Moscow and from 2 to 5 thousand hryvnias in Kiev. You can pick up the baby at the age of 2 months.

Maintenance in the apartment

Levko needs to find a quiet place without drafts and direct sun

Levkoy does not need special conditions. But since he does not have wool, drafts should not be allowed in the apartment. These cats are sensitive to cold. Also, as a result of exposure to sunlight, burns can appear on the skin of the animal. Therefore, reflective film should be glued to the windows.

To relax, the cat needs to equip a berth. This may be a litter, a house, a bed or a basket. The place should correspond to the size of an adult animal. It is better to place the litter in a corner, away from the passage zone and heating devices. Levko needs toys. For this, various balls, ropes or other similar items are suitable. Immediately after the appearance of a kitten in the apartment, they put a scratching post for him. In the cold season, place rugs on the windowsills. Levkoys are afraid of heights, so they won’t climb onto cabinets and other heights.

You must also observe safety measures. Install nets on windows, do not leave unattended open packaging with household chemicals. If the apartment has poisonous plants, remove them in a place inaccessible to the pet. The cat will benefit from walking. But you need to withdraw it only on a leash. In warm weather, walk with the cat in the shade to prevent ultraviolet rays from entering the skin. In cold weather, put levkoy in overalls.

Important! In winter, letting a cat out is not worth it.

Levkoy needs to be bathed with a special tool for hairless breeds

The skin of the left side requires special attention. Its sebaceous glands abundantly secrete a greasy lubricant that accumulates on the body of the animal. It should be removed 3-4 times a week with tissues soaked in clean water. Otherwise, the cat will look dirty. Once a month, levkoy is bathed with shampoos designed specifically for “bare” breeds. For example, GreenFields.

Inspect your pet's ears every week. If contaminated, remove them with cotton swabs dipped in vegetable oil. Cut your nails once a month. Remove eye discharge with a damp cloth. Since at home the cat cannot take care of clean teeth on its own, they need to be cleaned once a week with a special brush and paste (Hartz Dentist’s Best Toothpaste, Globalvet Toothpaste.

The diet of the cat should be as complete as possible.

For left-handed, 2 feeding options are suitable: natural food or industrial feed. In the cat's diet you need to include:

  • meat - beef, veal, chicken, turkey, rabbit,
  • offal - liver, cervix, heart, stomachs,
  • sea fish - sardine, cod, hake, salmon, trout, notothenia,
  • dairy products - kefir, yogurt, cottage cheese, cream,
  • eggs (1 yolk per week),
  • fats of animal and vegetable origin (0.5 tsp per day),
  • vegetables - cauliflower, carrots, zucchini, beets,
  • cereals - rice, millet, buckwheat,
  • greens - parsley, dill, salad, as well as green grass (corn, barley, oats).

The meat is preliminarily placed for two days in a freezer, then it is thawed and scalded with boiling water. This allows you to avoid infection of the cat with helminths. Meat products should be in the diet of levkoy daily. Fish is cooked 2-3 times a week. Previously, bones are removed from it. The diet of the animal by 2/3 should consist of meat or fish and 1/3 of the remaining products.

The cat can not be fed:

  • lamb and pork,
  • egg white
  • salty foods
  • onions
  • sausages
  • canned goods
  • Confectionery
  • spicy, fried and fatty foods,
  • potatoes.

Only premium products are selected from industrial feeds: Innova Evo, Wellness CORE, Natural Balance, Evolve Dry. Water is given to the pet in unlimited quantities. Levkoy quickly loses moisture, which leads to peeling and dry skin. Therefore, he must drink a lot.

The amount of food is calculated based on the weight of the animal. 30-60 g of food is required per 1 kg of mass. After six months the cat is fed 2 times a day, from 3 to 6 months - 4 times, from 1 to 3 months - 5 times, up to a month - 6 times.

Pregnancy and childbirth

During childbirth, you need to be ready to help

The duration of pregnancy is 63–65 days. Kittens born before 60 days will be unviable. You can determine the onset of pregnancy from the third week, when the cat's nipples become pronounced pink. She may also be bothered by vomiting. In the fifth week, an increase in weight becomes noticeable, in the sixth week, the nipples are filled with milk and increase in size. There are changes in the behavior of the pet. She becomes more affectionate and quiet. A pregnant cat needs a lot of calcium and protein. It can be provided with these elements using specialized feed.

Important! During pregnancy, the cat should not be given medications.

Prepare a box for the cat for delivery, cover the bottom with several diapers. It is not recommended to use soft wipes for this purpose. They will stick to the baby's body, because of which the cat will refuse to lick it. Such a kitten can choke in the amniotic fluid.

Important! If other animals live in the apartment, they must be removed from the cat during childbirth.

To help your pet, you will need:

  • petroleum jelly,
  • threads
  • sterile gloves
  • box for kittens
  • warmer,
  • pipette,
  • scissors,
  • alcohol.

A sign of the onset of labor is a decrease in the female’s body temperature to 36.7 ° C. The first stage lasts from 12 to 24 hours. It is accompanied by fights and attempts. At the second stage, a kitten appears. But first, the amniotic fluid, which has a yellowish color, leaves the cat. The normal presentation is the location of the baby head forward. But sometimes cubs also appear with their hind legs. The cat removes the amniotic fluid, gnaws the cord and licks the baby. In the third stage comes the aftermath. In most cases, the cat eats it.

If the birth process proceeds without complications, it is not worth interfering. But in some cases, the cat needs help. If part of the baby appeared, but he cannot be completely born, grab him with a napkin and pull him towards you at the next fight. The cat chews on the umbilical cord for 15 minutes. In the opposite case, cut it at a level of 2 cm from the baby’s tummy. Within 1 minute, the cat must remove the cub from the amniotic fluid. If she did not, cut the shell and free the baby. Pre-treat the scissors with alcohol.

Education Ukrainian levkoy

The cat needs to be accustomed to hygiene and obedience as early as possible

You can start raising a kitten as soon as he appears in the apartment. This process should be directed to the socialization of the animal, as well as to the formation of a tolerant attitude towards hygienic procedures. From childhood, teach a kitten to a leash. You can do this at home first. And when the baby gets used to it, start taking him outside. Also, the kitten should be accustomed to the scratching post. It can be sprinkled with valerian, this will help to attract the attention of the baby. With each attempt to sharpen his claws in the wrong place, say “You can’t!” Using strict intonation.

Teach your baby to bathe, brush your ears, teeth, and cut your claws. Another important stage of education is the introduction of the pet to the tray. Place your pet in the lavatory toilet after eating. If he begins to sit down in another place, immediately transfer it to the prepared container. Over time, he will understand what they want from him.

Diseases and Vaccinations

There are a number of diseases to which Levkoia has a predisposition:

  • metabolic disease,
  • hypovitaminosis,
  • uterine hernia
  • mastitis (inflammation of the mammary glands),
  • prolapse of the uterus
  • tumor formations
  • rabies,
  • dermatomycosis (fungal infection of the skin),
  • leukemia,
  • Aujeszky's disease or false rabies (acute viral disease affecting the central nervous system),
  • infectious peritonitis,
  • panleukopenia or “cat distemper”,
  • infectious rhinotracheitis,
  • chlamydia
  • salmonellosis.

For preventive purposes, vaccines are administered to a cat, the action of which is aimed at forming the body's immune defense against certain diseases:

  1. The first vaccination is performed in 2 months. After 2 weeks, revaccination is carried out, that is, the repeated administration of a similar vaccine in order to enhance immunity and increase its duration.
  2. The second vaccination is done in six months.
  3. The third - per year.

An adult cat is vaccinated every 12 months. Only healthy animals are allowed to the procedure. Therefore, 10 days before vaccination, the cat is given anthelmintic drugs: Dirofen, Prazitsid.

Owner reviews

Ukrainian Levkoy breed is 100% affection and kindness to all members of the family, and it is the same and not distinguishing anyone. Aggression from her? Never! Smile from her? Everyday. It can not be compared with any of the breeds. The mind is top notch. On the tray from the first minute, sleeps in the house, does not scratch his hands, understands everything. This creature is just from another planet! If you still doubt to take or not to take, then take it.

Levkoychiki kids are a miracle. Already at 5 days old they opened their eyes, in a week they move all the way on their own, try to play and share their mother’s nipples, like other kittens do this only in three weeks! We are also fascinated by the nature of adult left-handed dogs: affectionate, without obsession, playful, without destructiveness, smart, without arrogance, have good health, are not picky in food, are mastered with a tray for one or two, in general, a really wonderful breed of cats.

She is just a wonderful child! Very affectionate girl. Already managed to make friends with all the pets.

Ukrainian Levkoy is a unique breed. The advantages of these cats include a calm, affectionate, friendly character. But the owner of levkoy needs to monitor the condition of the skin of the pet, which must be regularly cleaned, as well as protected from sunlight.
