Today, few people know zinnia. But not immediately, she took her place in the botanical gardens and flower beds. We can say that the famous Austrian botanist Karl Linney was the first to consider her beauty. The name of the flower was given in honor of the German scientist Johann Gottfried Zinn, who brought to Linnaeus a herbarium made of zinnia.

Zinnia graceful

Zinnia began its rise to glory from the 17th century, and by the beginning of the past it was grown on all continents. It is also interesting that zinnia was a symbol of Indiana in 1931-1957.

The charm of zinnia in its extraordinary unpretentiousness, harmony and beauty of inflorescences - colorful bright hats from velvet petals. The genus includes about 22 species, many different forms, classic varieties and the latest hybrids.

Bright Zinnias

I love zinnia because it does not require frequent watering, it can grow and bloom in such a sunshine that not every decorative plant can tolerate. In the summer heat and land, I water zinnia quite rarely, but it is very plentiful. Zinnia does not like frosts and low temperatures.

Planting zinnia

Soils are preferred with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction. He loves the lungs, although he can grow on loam if broken by river sand and turfy soil.

Zinnia prefers light neutral soils

Zinnia can be grown in seedlings and seedlings.

Plant description

Elegant zinnia is a plant native to Mexico. Around the XVIII century, it was introduced to European countries, where it quickly gained incredible popularity.

Elegant zinnia is a perennial that we grow as an annual crop. She has a straight thin stalk, the length of which can be from 30 to 90 cm. The leaves are oblong, pointed, with smooth edges, painted dark green. There are short, hard villi on the stem and leaves.

The beginning of the flowering period falls in the middle of summer and lasts until the end of autumn. The buds are variegated and, depending on the variety, can be from 3 to 14 cm in diameter. At the end of flowering, spear-shaped seeds appear on the stems. Their surface is somewhat rough, bumpy, brown. The size of one fetus ranges from 0.8 to 1.3 cm.

Under optimal storage conditions, the seeds will retain excellent germination for three years. Flowering begins about two months after the seed has been planted in the ground. As you can see in the next photo, elegant zinnia blooms profusely, while individual buds can “live” for a month.

Seedling method

To sprout seeds faster, they are kept in wet gauze or pre-sowing treatment with potassium humate or Epin. The best temperature for germination is + 25 ° C.

Zinnia seedlings

After sprouting, zinnia seedlings dive into separate containers with a moist soil mixture, grow on a windowsill with enough heat and sunlight, watering moderate, regular.

Reckless way of growing

Frankly, I sow the seeds immediately into the ground. They emerge somewhere after 10 days with infrequent but plentiful watering. In the photo shoots of zinnia graceful variety 'Polar Bear'.

Zinnia sprouts

Zinnia seedlings are planted in open ground in late spring or early summer, when the threat of freezing frost has passed, otherwise there is a risk of damage to the plant even at low subzero temperatures.

Seedling method

The most popular way to grow zinnia elegant is to plant seeds for seedlings. The best time for this is the last decade of March or the first decade of April.

On a note! If the seeds are sown earlier than recommended, the seedlings will have too elongated stems, and after planting in the ground a significant part of the plants simply will not take root.

  1. Planting seeds for seedlings is necessary in small containers with a fertile substrate. The seed is immersed in the ground to a depth of about 1 cm, after which it is slightly moistened.
  2. Next, the containers are transferred to a warm place, which should be well lit.
  3. Provided that the first stage was carried out according to all the rules, a week later elegant zinnia will give young shoots.
  4. However, sprouts should not be dived right away - you must wait until a couple of real leaves appear on each of them. Carefully remove the seedlings from the total capacity and distribute it in separate pots, while no more than 3 plants can be placed in one.

While the culture will wait for planting in open ground, it is necessary to feed it with complex fertilizers two to three times.

Important! Remember that to take out seedlings to fresh air is allowed only in warm weather! And do not overdo it with watering - increased humidity can provoke the formation of a fungus (black leg)!

Zinnia Care

As I said, it is advisable not to water often, but abundantly. For feeding, you can use complex mineral fertilizers with a low nitrogen content. That's all the care!

Planting seeds in open ground

The cultivation of elegant zinnia from seeds immediately in the open ground is somewhat easier, since in this case there is no need to mess with seedlings. It is recommended to plant seeds in the ground only after freezing is over and the substrate warms up sufficiently. Usually this procedure is carried out in the month of May.

  1. We lay the seeds in the soil to a depth of not more than 5 cm, while the distance between the holes should be about 35-40 cm. 3-4 seeds can be thrown into each hole.
  2. A week later, young shoots appear on the surface of the soil. When their height reaches 10 cm, we cut off the extra sprouts, leaving one plant in each well.
  3. After thinning, we introduce complex fertilizers into the soil.
  4. At first, do not forget to cover the zinnia at night so that the sprouts do not freeze. It is necessary to do this until the culture has grown and strengthened enough.

On a note! Remember that elegant zinnia grown in this way begins to bloom somewhat later than planted seedlings. The first buds will appear no earlier than the last decade of July!

Zinnia elegant unpretentious and capricious. For good germination and lush flowering, you must:

  • from time to time to dig the ground in the root zone - so you will ensure optimal air access to the roots,
  • to clean the flower bed, removing weeds and fallen leaves - this way you protect the flowers from pests, and the garden will always look neat,
  • too often watering elegant zinnia is not necessary, as it is a drought-resistant crop - watering should be rare, but plentiful,

Recommendation! Moisturizing the soil, a stream of water should be directed only under the roots and make sure that moisture does not get on the buds. Otherwise, they may rot. Here it should be remembered that too long "thirst" also adversely affect the plants - the leaves will fade, and the flowers will become pale.

Important! Organic fertilizers should not be abused, as this can lead to the spread of powdery mildew.

Change in weather conditions (sudden freezing) of zinnia gracefully tolerates quite poorly and stops flowering at low temperatures. With a prolonged decrease in temperature, plants can die. If the cold was short, then the flowerbed is quite possible to save. To do this, it is enough to cut off all dead parts from the bushes, and after a while the culture will recover and will again begin to produce new buds.

Cut graceful zinnia flowers are able to stand for about a week, while maintaining their attractive appearance. And so that the plants stay fresh for a long time, it is advisable to collect only those with buds that open three quarters. And before you put the flowers in a vase, their stems must be dipped in hot water. If you notice that the buds are beginning to fade, the “bathing” procedure can be repeated.

Zinnia graceful (Zinnia elegans)

An annual plant with a height of 30 to 90 cm, when planted between instances, it should be 20-25 cm.It is good for large, bright, beautiful inflorescences of white, yellow, pink, purple stains, which, with a long absence of watering, can become smaller and fade. Flowering is long: begins in June and lasts until frost.

Zinnia graceful (Zinnia elegans)

Inflorescences of this type of zinnia are divided into simple, semi-double and double.

Variety 'Polar Bear'

I could not resist and bought seeds. I was attracted by the bright white terry hats of a rounded shape with graceful, slightly curved petals. The height of the bush, according to the description, is about 65 cm. The seed producer says that the color is with a slight greenish tint, but at the exhibition in this variety I did not notice a clear shade. Only if inside the flower.

I hope that what grows up with me will bloom as beautifully as in the photo.

Variety 'Lavender'

I want to share my other find - purple zinnia. I also saw her at the exhibition and was simply fascinated by this gentle lavender shade of petals.

The bush is quite stately, up to 80 cm tall.

Variety group 'Fantasy'

Increasingly, in the gardens and flower beds of our country, you can see zinnias with large double flowers. Reed petals are unusually curved, narrow, sometimes bifurcated at the end.

Zinnia bushes of this form are spherical, up to 65 cm high, quite compact. The leaves are bright green, large. Inflorescences up to 10 cm in diameter, loose, hemispherical. This form of zinnia has a number of interesting varieties, different in height, color and type of inflorescences.

The most popular varieties:

  • 'Short staff '. Bushes are not more than 25 cm tall, flowers are round, double, with a diameter of about 10 cm, red, coral, white, and cherry. Ideal for outdoor use.

  • Variety mix 'Carousel'. The beauty of the mixture is that it sometimes comes across very beautiful and unexpected specimens. Plant height about 60 cm.

Zinnia angustifolia (Zinnia angustifolia)

Annual, propagated by seeds. It reaches a height of 40 cm. It begins to bloom from the end of June and continues to delight with bright colors until frost. Inflorescences of this species are small, simple or semi-double.
Reed petals are monophonic, yellow or orange, tubular internal - small, dark.

Seedlings are sown in April. Shoots appear on the 5-8th day. In central Russia, they are planted in open ground after frost, around the end of May. In the southern regions - since mid-April. The distance between plants is about 30 cm.

Thanks to progress that does not stand still, both species have acquired many hybrids that are more resistant to temperature conditions, pests and diseases. And the range of colors and shapes of hybrid zinnia petals is simply unlimited!

Zinnia 'Sahggy Dog'

I think no one will argue that the many-sided beauty Zinnia definitely deserves a worthy and prominent place in the garden. See how Irina, our regular author from Sevastopol, talks about her zinnias sincerely.

If you plant zinnia at least once, you will probably want to decorate your garden with it every year. I picked up some more interesting publications about this many-sided beauty:
