We continue to choose sustainable perennials for a summer residence that is not possible to visit regularly. Let me remind you that the key characteristics of these ascetics are listed in the article Unassuming beauties: we choose plants for flower beds in the sun and in the shade.

It is clear that even in two publications it is impossible to consider the whole diversity of such species, so I draw your attention to the fact that today we select not only winter hardy, but also drought tolerant perennials for open sunny places. In the comments, you can always supplement the topic with stories about the species that at your dachas have successfully passed the test of the sun, frost and sparse watering.

Ornamental cereals and grassy grasses

In addition to the true cereals - representatives of the family Myatlikovye, or Cereals (Poaceae / Gramineae), I included here sedges (Carex) from the eponymous family of sedge (Cyperaceae), which look very similar to them. All selected species are amazingly tenacious and unpretentious, while invariably pleasing with a beautiful "fountain" of leaves and inflorescences.

Gray fescue

The only weak point of drought tolerant species is that they do not tolerate long waterlogging of the soil. In winter thaws on heavy soil without drainage gray fescue (Festuca glauca) may vypryat.

Frost-resistant (zone 4). For many years, without loss of decorativeness, it grows on poor drained soils. In the spring he will not refuse to comb out. Grain lovers prefer to share it every 3-4 years, but this is not necessary.

Mountain sedge

In nature mountain sedge (Carex montana) is found in the subalpine zone in the mountains of Europe. Prefers sunny places with dry sandy soils. It forms beautiful bright green bumps. Moreover, the color of soft pubescent leaves is variable - bluish in summer, turns brown by winter. With age, the tussock expands and thickens significantly.

Drought resistant. It is frost-resistant (zone 4), the critical winter minimum drops to the level of –18 ° С. It is good in rockeries thanks to its compact size, its height is 20-50 cm, width is 30-40 cm. Propagated by division in spring or early summer. The minimum that it needs to maintain decorativeness is to comb out once from the old leaves once in the spring, and slightly trim if necessary.

You can find a large assortment of different types of sedges in our catalog, combining the offers of various garden online stores. See a selection of species and varieties of sedge.

Cecelria blue

They consider Western Europe and the British Isles their homeland. Cecelria blue (Sesleria caerulea) has already perfectly adapted to the conditions of central Russia, where it feels at home and often winters as an evergreen or semi-evergreen plant. It claims to be a tapeworm in the flower garden of herbs.

Frost-resistant (zones 4-9). Extremely unpretentious. Her requirements are minimal - sunny places, any soil (even poor, calcareous), except for very moist ones. Moreover, on scarce soils, the gray-green hummocks of the Cesleria blue well retain their rounded shape. It withstands periodic flooding and drought. Just do not like it when they often walk on it. Propagated by division in spring or autumn.

Kotovnikovy shower cap

Spicy representative of the Labret, or Lamiaceae family (Labiatae / Lamiaceae). Kotovnikovy shower cap (Calamintha nepeta) is a rhizome perennial with a height and width of 45 cm. The whole plant smells of mint with camphor notes, and the house of large-flowered (C. grandiflora) has a pleasant coniferous-menthol aroma. Outwardly, both are similar to mint and lemon balm, so it is the smell that helps to accurately determine the plant. The flowers are small, light pink, collected in racemose inflorescences, bloom from June to late autumn.

Surprisingly, it is a fact: the Kotovnikovy soulful grows right under my feet, it can often be seen in the vicinity of the Nikitsky Botanical Garden. Despite the fact that Central Europe, North-West Africa, and Northern Turkey are considered his homeland, he winters well in the middle zone of Russia, transferring frosts to –29 ° С. Extremely drought tolerant and unpretentious to soils. Propagated by seeds (sowing - in April) and division in the spring.

And seedlings can be picked up in our catalog, where offers of many large garden online stores are collected. See a selection of seedlings of the Kotovnikovy soul:

The coluria is gravilate

Homeland - Altai, where it is well known as a "clove root." It is found in Eastern Siberia, Tuva. The coluria is gravilate (Coluria geoides) is a small perennial from the Rosaceae family with creeping rhizome, a rosette of beautiful carved leaves and bright yellow flowers that bloom in May. Roots - a storehouse of essential oil with a predominance of eugenol, which gives a clove flavor.

Winter hardiness (zone 4). It is drought-resistant, but in hot and dry summers it still needs to be watered at least occasionally. Propagated by seeds (sowing - in April) and division in the spring. Give her a small piece of land "in the backyard."

Echinacea narrow-leaved

A beautiful representative of the Asteraceae family is from North America. Till narrow-leaved echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia) is in the shadow of its famous relative - e. purple (E. purpurea), but its popularity is growing every year. Tall and slim - 90 cm or more in height and 45 cm in width. Leaves are narrower than e. purple, up to 15 cm long. Spectacular pink inflorescences-baskets with narrow marginal reed flowers with a diameter of up to 4.5 cm. Blooms from the first decade of June to the end of July (in the conditions of the southern coast of Crimea).

Winters well in central Russia (zone 4). It is more drought tolerant than other species. Propagated by seeds, sowing - in 2 terms: in April and October. In the first year it forms only a rosette of leaves.
