Dog and Gum Care
Preventing gum disease is much easier than treating it. The most common cause of this disease is tartar, which prevents the gums from snugly attached to the tooth.
Usually it occurs if solid food is absent or insufficient in the dog food - whole carrots, apples, crackers, etc. In this case, if for some reason the dog cannot be given, you need to regularly brush the dog’s teeth with a cotton wool wound on a stick with tooth powder without aromatic additives once a week. Then you should wipe, polish your teeth with a soft cloth.
But if nevertheless you did not follow, and tartar was formed, then in this case mechanical removal of tartar is shown.
First of all, keep the dog motionless so that the tartar removal process is quick and painless. Hold the dog’s face firmly with one hand while lifting her lip with the same hand. Taking the scaler (hook for removing tartar) in the other hand and easily moving the gum away with the working part of the instrument, place it between the gum and tartar, pressing it tightly against the tooth and holding it parallel to it. Then, with a decisive vertical movement, remove the stone from the tooth. Today, veterinarians remove tartar with ultrasound. But the dog is given easy anesthesia in order to immobilize it (and often it should not be given)
It is necessary to remove tartar; it brings suffering to the dog and is often the cause of halitosis. Better if large tartar will be removed by a veterinarian, and under general anesthesia.
No ideal remedy for the prevention of tartar has yet been found. One famous dog handler offers an old proven recipe to deal with it: regular addition of tomatoes or 2-3 times a week - fresh tomato juice to food. This will either prevent the formation of tartar, or will so thin it that the stone will become brittle and will be easy to remove.
A proven prophylactic and treatment for gum disease is to massage into the gums a mixture of ordinary baking soda and a few drops of lemon juice once a week. Propolis also works well on gums.
