Big Blue Gascon Hound
( GrandBleu de Gascogne, Large Blue Gascony Hound)
Standard: FCI No. 22.
Belongs to the group: Ranched >> big hounds.
DESCRIPTION. The large blue Gascon hound is one of the tallest among all hounds in the world (the height at the withers reaches 71 cm). A strong-built dog with strong limbs and a large, powerful head. Weight 32 - 35 kg. The coat is thick and not too short. Color blue: on a white background, a thick black speck, as well as black spots, all this is complemented by red tan.
HISTORY. Dogs inherited excellent hunting qualities from their immediate ancestor Bloodhound: a delicate sense, excellent vision, and also temperament. The big blue Gascon hound is the largest and, perhaps, the most impressive representative of this group. In the time of Henry IV, dogs were bred in Brook Castle, and even then they totaled several generations. The creator of the breed, Baron de Rueble, until his death in 1892, forbade crossing his pets with other dogs, which is why the animals by that time were completely deprived of foreign blood. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was impossible to maintain the breed in this condition: black color acquired from black bloodhounds used as the initial breed became more prevalent in the color of dogs. The blue Gascon hound could only be preserved by crossing with other breeds, but since the bloodhound had changed a lot by then, it had to be abandoned. The choice fell on the Gascon-Sentong hound and Ariejo. Over time, the large Gascon hound lost its popularity, since hunting with such large dogs often presented certain difficulties. The breed to this day is considered quite rare even in its homeland, in other countries there are only a few specimens.
CHARACTERISTIC. The characteristic features of the breed are a suspension on the throat, long ears in a crease and a melancholy look. The large blue Gascon hound has a highly developed hunting instinct and is not very suitable for the role of a purely family dog. With its size, the dog needs a lot of movement, and its natural makings of a first-class hunting dog must certainly be in demand on the hunt. The dog works slowly, but with concentration, it has a deep voice that you can’t confuse with any other. Long ears should be regularly wiped with a damp cloth to avoid possible inflammation.
USING. She used to hunt wolves, bears and deer, as well as foxes and hares.
CHARACTER. Work on the cold trail does not affect the temperament of this dog: it has a surprisingly warm attitude to the owner, which is generally typical of hounds. She is full of self-esteem, but loves to give pleasure to her master. However, when hunting, this dog is far from an affectionate home pussy: her love is aimed only at family members.
