Eclectus or noble parrots

A proud look, an expressive eye, a calm disposition, is it not enough to deserve the name "noble parrot"? Well, he was still able to confuse the zoologists who saw him for the first time. The fact is that these birds have a pronounced sexual dimorphism in color, but not the same as in most birds, when the male is brighter or larger than the female. Here nature did not spare colors for both sexual partners: both male and female are both magnificent, but colored ... in different ways. Researchers of the animal world of the Indo-Australian archipelago did not expect such a trick and mistakenly attributed the males to one. And females - to another species of parrots, calling them “green lory” and “red lory”. And only after years it became clear that two at first glance completely different birds belong to the same species. But another name, a two-color parrot, is quite justified. Indeed, most of the plumage of the male is painted in grass-green color, only the sides of the body and the underside of the wings are red, and the fold of the wing and wings is blue, the bottom of the tail is dull black. The beak of the representatives of different subspecies, and there are 10-12 of them, is colored differently: from light yellow to coral red. The mandible is black. The legs are gray. The primary color of the female is red. Darkening on the back and neck. The lower body and the collar2 are violet-blue. The fold of the wing is turquoise, fly-blue with green outer webs. The underside of the wing is blue. The tail is from red-brown to yellowish-orange. Lightening to the top. The beak is black. The eyes of males are brown, and those of females are light yellow.

Noble parrots have been known as a cage bird since 1745, but they began to breed in the 19th century, and it turned out that it was not very difficult. Noble and ringed parrots are combined into a group of beak parrots subfamilies of real parrots. This is due to the fact that their beak has a smooth, as if waxed surface and is painted (beak) most often in yellow (ivory) or red. Noble parrots are common in the tropical zone - on the Kane York Peninsula in Australia and the islands of New Guinea, Moluccas, Solomon, Bismarck, Louisiana, etc.

They live in primary multi-tier forests and coastal forests with oil palm and fig trees (figs). Their fruits are a favorite food of parrots.
Noble parrots are kept singly or in pairs. Not gathering in packs even outside the breeding season. However, cases of collective overnight stays are described when up to eight birds were found in one hollow of a tree. Nest in hollows at high altitude - above 14 m above the ground. In the clutch there are 2 eggs that only the female incubates. The male rarely visits the nest. These birds are bred in large cages and small indoor enclosures. These tropical birds are very sensitive to cold, sudden changes in temperature and drafts. A nest box for them is made not less than 30 + 30 + 50 cm, with a notch diameter of 12 cm. The female lays 2 eggs with an interval of 2-3 days, the incubation period is 28-29 days. Only the female incubates., The male feeds her. Chicks leave the nest at the age of 60-70 days, and adult birds feed them for another two weeks. After this, the young are planted, and adults begin the second clutch.

Appearance, size, lifestyle in nature

Another popular name for eclectus (Latin Eclectus roratus) is the noble parrots. Dimensions depending on the subspecies can range from 29 to 37 cm. Males and females vary greatly. Males have green plumage, females have red-cherry plumage. This species belongs to centenarians. How many eclectus parrots live? The International ZooYearbook provides information on a 28.5 year old bird at the San Diego Zoo. Animal Conservation provides information on life expectancy of 40.8 years, but this information is no longer documented.

Eclectus is classified into several subspecies. There are different opinions about the exact number of subspecies that are kept in captivity, this is due to the fact that different subspecies were actively crossed in the past. As a result, there is some confusion when determining their exact number:

  • Eclectus roratus polychloros.
  • Eclectus roratus roratus.
  • Eclectus roratus solomensis.
  • Eclectus roratus vosmaeri.
  • Eclectus roratus biaki.
  • Eclectus roratus cornelia.
  • Eclectus roratus macgillivrayi.
  • Eclectus roratus riedeli Meyer.
  • Eclectus roratus polychloros.
  • Eclectus roratus aruensis.
  • Eclectus roratus westermani - this subspecies is the subject of controversy.

Females of different subspecies are distinguished by a blue rim near the eyes, a shade of feathers on the chest and yellow feathers on the tail, as well as size. It is quite difficult to understand which subspecies the male belongs to - they usually try to identify them by the size and shades of the plumage.

In general, these are calm birds. Although capable of screaming in a loud, loud, piercing voice. If you decide to become the owner of an eclectus parrot, then you need to take care of a spacious and durable cage for a parrot. In Russia, the most popular cell models are Triol (a Chinese manufacturer that gained popularity due to a good price / quality ratio), Italian FOP, IMAC and Ferplast. It is best to buy the bird itself from the breeder or in the nursery. The Eclectus broodling chick is originally located to humans and is easily tamed, unlike a nature man (caught in nature), which can take several years to tame.

Noble parrots have good ability to teach human speech. Like other large species are able to use phrases to the place.

Lifestyle in nature

The range depends on the subspecies:

  • New Guinia - eclectus roratus polychloros, eclectus roratus polychloros, eclectus roratus aruensis.
  • Moluccas (or Spice Islands) - eclectus roratus roratus, eclectus roratus vosmaeri (northern part of the islands).
  • Solomon Islands - eclectus roratus solomensis.
  • Biak Islands - eclectus roratus biaki.
  • Sumba Islands - eclectus roratus cornelia.
  • Cape York Peninsula in Northern Australia - eclectus roratus macgillivrayi.
  • Tanimbar Islands - eclectus roratus riedeli.
